This Caulfield North project started with a classic Californian Bungalow on a generous north-facing block. With good bones and original character, there was real scope to do something special.
A new second storey and rooftop terrace was added, accessed via two open-tread timber staircases that draw light down through the centre of the home. The ground floor was freed up to function as one connected living and entertaining space, anchored by a kitchen featuring an oversized island with marble benchtops, integrated appliances, a built-in wine fridge and a combination of an off-white and warm timber cabinetry. A sculptural brass and glass pendant runs the length of the island. The adjoining living area is anchored by a gas fireplace set within a full-height fluted panel wall, with floor-to-ceiling sheers softening the northern light.
A dedicated study/second living area sits behind French doors with brass hardware – a quiet nod to the period of the original home – with custom joinery and integrated shelving throughout.
The Californian Bungalow framework is still there in the wide entrance, the flow from room to room and the sense that the home has always been generous with its spaces. Everything added since simply belongs.
