classic revival
Our Edwardian extension was runner up in the HIA Victorian Housing Award for the Best Renovation/Addition category. The owners of the 1910 Edwardian weatherboard had lived in the property for seven years when the need for expansion to accommodate their evolving family became necessary.
There was a partial rear renovation completed in 1990 with the remainder being a traditional layout, which was becoming increasingly impractical. Our brief was for the expansion for open plan living with indoor/outdoor enjoyment for the family.
The traditional facade was to remain intact and refreshed with a coat of paint and immaculate landscaping, without alluding to the modern two storey extension at the rear. Built with lightweight materials and floor to ceiling glass, intentionally constructed to enjoy the outdoors visually from all angles.
The back of the building was demolished to be replaced with a double storey building, complete with a new deck. The designer kitchen, dining and living spaces at the rear act as a flexible open space, allowing seamless movement from one area to the next.
The warmth of the stained Tasmanian timber floors extend from the front of the house throughout, creating a connection of old and new materials. Sustainable practices were introduced with solar panelling, grey water treatment, awnings for the harsh summer sun and double glazing.
